This is the wreck of the S. S. Waitangi that sank at the Patea breakwater in 1923. It was covered with black sand for decades, peeking from its resting place on occasion, but being covered again. The winds uncovered it over the last few years and it had been visible since. Click here for more information.

Brookes Road Cottage
Another exhibit at Pioneer Village, Stratford.
Mr
C.A. Lehman built this 2-room cottage for his new bride to move into
in 1882 along Brookes Road. It survived the 1886 fire, as did the
family by burying themselves amongst the potato crop. This cottage
was found inside the building it was enclosed in when it was
demolished.

Cliff Top Garden, Opunake
The weather was stunning this weekend and we went for a drive to Opunake beach. It seems that there was a surfing event going on (Taranaki has some great surf beaches, click here) so we went up to the lookout to watch. The little dots in the photo below are surfers waiting for a wave.
I was thinking about walking down the walkway when I noticed a new red sign. Of course, we had to see what this garden was about...
Not knowing what to expect, we started down the path and caught a glimpse of color.
And we were stunned by the beauty of this place that is hidden from all sides.
One of the volunteers was cutting grass as we came back to the car. It seems that he started the garden about 18 months ago with his own plants. Since then, the district has contributed plants to the project and volunteers keep it looking nice.
Along the way, there were lovely views of the ocean.

St Mary's Anglican Church., Upokongaro
We visited this church (quickly) when on a riverboat cruise a few years ago in Wanganui.
This historic place was registered under the Historic Places Act 1980. The following text is the original citation considered by the NZHPT Board at the time of registration.
St Mary's Anglican Church at Upokongaro was dedicated on 11 November 1877 and was the first church in the Wanganui Parochial District. It was built by Mr J. Randal to a plan submitted by Wanganui architect, Mr E.C. Morgan. It was not declared debt free until two years later and on the 20 July 1879 was consecrated by the Bishop of Wellington and named St Mary's.
Among the many endowments are three stained glass windows imported from England by Mr & Mrs H. Montgomery in memory of their son, Archibald, who was drowned when the 'Avalanche' sank in the English Channel in 1877. The distinctive feature of St Mary's is its unusual spire which is designed to rise from four corners at the base to three giving the impression that the spire is leaning.
The church in its rural setting overlooking the Wanganui River is a landmark and a symbol of pioneer faith.
