Brookes Road Cottage

Another exhibit at Pioneer Village, Stratford.

Mr C.A. Lehman built this 2-room cottage for his new bride to move into in 1882 along Brookes Road. It survived the 1886 fire, as did the family by burying themselves amongst the potato crop. This cottage was found inside the building it was enclosed in when it was demolished.

At Pioneer Village in Stratford, I found this quite ingenious to make a house from metal drums.

The little sign on the door says 'whare' (pronounced far-ay), a Maori word that means 'home'.

telephone exchange and barber shop

Pioneer Village in Stratford has this tiny phone exchange building from the past. "The Cardiff Exchange was built in 1889 and was moved to Mr I J Harrison’s property on Climie Road, then later re-sited at Taranaki Pioneer Village on 18.12.85. The telephone exchange is part of the old Inglewood Post Office Exchange from the same period and is part of what was a 100 line switchboard. A telephone office was opened in 1895 in Cardiff."

Yes, all the dial phones here in NZ have the numbers reversed from the US phones.

The main hospital museum building was an ex-boys borstal (youth detention center) from Levin which was built in the 1940's. The west building (entrance below) was the nurses' recreation room built in 1953.

Sign says: Written on the side of the iron lung: "Do not destroy this or the bellows. It will become in time an item of medical history for a museum. Signed A. Hayton 1979 Hawera Hospital"

This was originally built around 1890 and situated in New Plymouth and moved from Taranaki Base Hospital to Taranaki Pioneer Village on 28.2.86. The display is a memorial to Drs Bill and Doris Gordon, both prominent Stratford physicians. Some of the medical equipment was donated by the Gordon family.

I was inspired to revisit Pioneer Village in Stratford and get some fresh shots for the Rubbish Tuesday meme. I didn't like history class, but maybe if they explained it visually, like this place, I would have!
