Fringe Festival 2015

Each year, usually starting the last weekend in October, we enjoy visiting colorful spring gardens across the area that are registered with the Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival. Once again, we were not disappointed and I couldn't wait to share with you!

Hikurangi Garden, Okato

Our first stop of the Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival was in Okato and belonged to Barbara Williams who has owned it for over 60 years. We were greeted by Wendy, the gardener, who has maintained these gardens for over 15 years.

The paths were immaculate and you could tell that each and every leaf and blossom of the garden were tended with lots of love.

Below is a horizontal elm, quite a sight to see.

It was so colorful and well-established; Hubby and I spent a lot of time wandering around the 7 acres of scenery taking photos.

These photos are from the woolshed. According to Mrs Williams' daughter, if you turned on the electricity, it would be ready to shear sheep.

first of fringe festival shots

Each year, there are two garden festivals that take place on the first two weekends in October and the week in between. During those 9 days, you can visit the gardens that are associated with the festivals and enjoy the wonderful spring blossoms.

About 10 years ago, the original festival, apparently, decided that some gardens weren't good enough and rejected their entries. Two of these rejected gardeners decided to start their own festival and that's how the Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival was born.

We think the Fringe Festival seems to embody the original reason for the festival--the gardens--while the original one seems to be more interested in making money. So, we patronize the Fringe Festival each year and this year we found some amazing places!
