Between rain showers, I picked up some dahlias that had fallen over. Realizing that they were broken off, I threw them into the cow pasture paddock and discovered my own little fungi colonies.

winter scene
I thought this shot screamed 'Winter!' with a sense of humor humour. It may only be a scarf around the poor hart's neck but there aren't a lot of seasonal visuals here in New Zealand.

the legend of tutunui
This sculpture represents Tutunui and his legend.
The story of Tutunui the whale comes from the Pacific islands and also links to Patea traditions. The whale Tutunui is the pet of the great chief Tinirau. When a son is born to Tinirau, the tohunga (priest) Kae is called upon to perform the birth ceremonies and is fed a morsel of flesh from the whale. Tinirau allows Tutunui to take Kae home over the sea. Remembering the succulent taste of the whale, Kae manipulates the death of Tutunui, and cooks his flesh in an oven, wrapped in koromiko leaves, which hold in the fat and flavour. Kae is found out by Tinirau and put to death. For a longer version of the story you can click here.

view from my window
Just a few days ago, there was no snow on the mountaintop, but the weather has finally turned cold enough to cover it over. Alas, winter is definitely on its way.

quirky business
I'm pretty sure you won't see something like this in the city!
I never thought much about coffins, but this builder who is on welfare the dole is ambitious enough to try to start a business. Strange but admirable. I'm not sure this would be allowed in the States--too many regulations.

it's beginning to look a lot like summer!
The snow is melting on Mt. Taranaki (also known as Mt. Egmont) and the skies are looking mighty blue.

welcome swallows
There are many of these tiny swallows that hang around at our house. They eat the bugs that our compost barrels attract. I have counted 14 at one time, flitting though the sky. I wish I could catch one in flight--they are so graceful. They put on a show for me each evening.

canadian geese in nz, eh!
These Canadian geese were feeding beneath a rhododendron at Lake Mangamahoe last weekend. They are certainly a long way from home!
