pohutukawas are blooming!

We went out on the day after Christmas looking for pohutukawas and were not disappointed!

We also found this cute display.

pohutukawas

Although these beauties are considered the 'NZ Christmas Tree', they don't usually bloom in Taranaki until after the first of the year. This spring and summer have been quite dry, though, and I'm sure that has had an effect on their blooming cycle for them to start blooming a bit earlier than usual.

Pohutukawa

Called the 'New Zealand Christmas Tree' the pohutukawas along the coastline bloom before those planted more inland. The weather has been miserable for over a week, with rain that we sorely need, but the colors are still stunning.

Sometimes, it's a Christmas bush along the shore, but the pohutukawa is still beautifully red in the summer, just in time for Christmas.
