kowhai and tuis

The kowhai (pronounced KO-fie) is a lovely tree native to New Zealand and
the name is the Maori word for 'yellow'.

Native birds love the trees and at Hollards yesterday, we found a
tree full of tuis.

Yellow beauties

I thought these were in a tree top in Pukekura Park. Whatever they are, I like them.

Thanks, Ida, for the ID as Mahonia aquifolium or Oregon Grape.

enjoying the sun

This little beauty was sunning herself after a night of cold temperatures. If anybody knows her name, I'd be glad for you to let me know.  Thanks, Colleen and Gunilla for reminding me she's a zinnia :)

cicada

I have no idea what this flower is but I thought it was awesome. The cicada was a bonus!

sunrise in the country

As I've said many times, I don't do mornings (somebody has to keep the world going while morning people sleep!). Hubby took this shot one foggy morning for me.

Christmas road trip

On Christmas Day, we took a little road trip to Wanganui. First stop was Virginia Lake Park with a visit to their winter garden (note Snoopy and the Red Baron--makes me want to break into song!)

Then on to the lake to feed the ducks. The black bird with the funky feet is an Australian coot. And then to the bird houses.

Hubby found a great place along the Whanganui River for our picnic. The silver orb is artwork with the river plotted around it.

It's still weird to have Christmas in the summer, but I'm getting used to it!

**About the spelling--the town lost the 'h' somewhere along the way but the river never did. At the moment, there is a push to put it back into the town spelling, but it hasn't happened as of this writing.

what's in a name?

WEED: a plant considered undesirable in a particular situation.

I suppose it comes down to a matter of timing whether a bloom is a weed or not. These beauties caught my eye before they met their premature demise.

the sky at dusk

Hubby used to ask me what I saw when I'd run out of the house at dusk with the camera. After hearing, 'The sky!' over and over, he just rolls his eyes now. But I find the clouds and colors quite fascinating. These are just a few that I have taken. The only editing I've done is cropping.

springtime!

It seemed that spring had already arrived at Hollard Gardens this weekend! Come on, spring!

stubborn autumn leaves

I never thought much about weather in Kansas, but I have had an enormous education on the subject since moving to New Zealand. In Kansas, the weather seemed to hang on for a few days but here it can change from hour to hour. I have learned that coastal areas take longer to change because of the water temperature. That's one reason why these autumn leaves are hanging on even when the calendar says it's winter. This shot was taken in Pukekura Park in New Plymouth--a coastal town.

view from a bench

Those of you that visit regularly know that I often post photos from Hollard Gardens. It's a wonderful place that began as a private garden and is now a public place run by the Taranaki District Council. This is the view we had while we rested for a bit.

I have no idea what this little critter is, but he (she?) seemed to be enjoying the flowers as much as we did!

kite day!

Looking out my kitchen window on Sunday morning, I saw kites flying above the trees so we went to check it out. Clouds covered the sky but the wind was perfect for flying!

color overload

The annual Fringe Festival has ended and I have so many photos that I just can't bear to post them one at a time!
