little blue beauties

I don't know what these minuscule blooms are but they decorate my yard--everywhere!

Te Rewa Rewa bridge in New Plymouth

This wonderful piece of architecture is part of the Coastal Walkway along the ocean in New Plymouth

The bridge was placed so that this is the view you get on a sunny day as you come around the last curve toward the bridge. Pretty spectacular, I think!

stubborn autumn leaves

I never thought much about weather in Kansas, but I have had an enormous education on the subject since moving to New Zealand. In Kansas, the weather seemed to hang on for a few days but here it can change from hour to hour. I have learned that coastal areas take longer to change because of the water temperature. That's one reason why these autumn leaves are hanging on even when the calendar says it's winter. This shot was taken in Pukekura Park in New Plymouth--a coastal town.

pukekos

We don't usually see so many of these wild birds together, so I was surprised when we saw such a large group of them. They are probably a pair and their almost-grown offspring that we see occasionally on the drive.

They seemed to be quite curious about the car stopped on the road.

Apparently, these native birds are quite smart. They were trained for this local ad a few years ago. There are even videos on their website to teach you to train your pukeko!

pohutukawa

Cold weather has driven me into my archives. This is a pohutukawa tree--called the New Zealand Christmas tree since it usually blooms about that time of year.

doves in the park, tararua

We came across this little park in the Tararua area and were greeted by doves outside and inside the tent. I have no idea what it was all about, but the doves were gorgeous.

high tide at patea

I never tire of watching the waves come in. Hubby says I'm easily amused and I guess I am. I told him from the time we met on the internet that I was a cheap date!

colors in the sky

This was the view down our long, long road to the house. Our very own rainbow!

artwork in the sky

I'm not sure if I'm in the majority or minority when it comes to being in awe of the clouds on a bright, clear day, but I find clouds wonderfully artistic. Judge for yourself.

rocky coast

I think this part of the coast is fascinating with its lava flow lines and rocks. On the other side of the sea wall (photo below) is a great sandy beach.

kite day!

Looking out my kitchen window on Sunday morning, I saw kites flying above the trees so we went to check it out. Clouds covered the sky but the wind was perfect for flying!

parasailing

Many people take their vacation holiday over Christmas and New Year's here in New Zealand. Stores are closed on Christmas Day, New Year's Day and the day after New Year's. I'll leave you to your own conclusions about that. Anyway, the second of  January was nice and sunny so we went for a ride and happened to see these two guys jump off a hillside by the ocean called Paritutu Rock. It's a pretty big rock.

evening skies

I've never really lived without neighbors before this last move--not by choice, but by circumstance. Now that we have clear views of nature for miles, I spend a lot of time making Hubby look out the window at something I found. The sunsets are pretty spectacular and we are always taking photos as the sun sets behind the trees. Here are a few peeks at our Taranaki sunsets.

color overload

The annual Fringe Festival has ended and I have so many photos that I just can't bear to post them one at a time!

the ugly tree

When we moved to this house, the landlord told me the two trees in the front yard garden were ugly and he didn't care if we chopped them down. The real estate agent said they were ugly, too, but their blooms attracted native birds. I had no idea what kind of trees they were so I figured we'd let them bloom and see what happens.

Well, it turns out they are cherry trees with bookoo blooms! (I have been saying 'bookoo' all my life but don't remember where I heard the phrase. I'm sure it's an Americanization of French.) Anyway, it has been quite windy these last few days and the grass is covered with tiny white petals. The wind finally died down so I could get some photos and I think they look so great against the blue sky.
