my spring garden

Little by little spring is showing herself. These flowers are from my garden,
with tulips and irises and poppies budding--oh, my!

pukeiti gardens

We don't get to Pukeiti Gardens very often--mostly because it's down some very winding narrow roads but it was too sunny over the weekend to sit home so we ventured out there, They are making some interesting upgrades to the park, 3 years' worth, so we might have to visit a little more often.

It is too early for the rhodos to be out in all their splendor and beauty yet, but we did manage to get some spring color,

Bason Botanical Gardens

Cloudy weather of late, but we found some color in Whanganui at Bason Botanical Gardens. It's free to enter and has lovely colors, especially in the spring.

sunny spring

Although I am content to tend to my garden and watch it grow, I do get out occasionally and look at other stuff. Yesterday was so sunny and pretty that Hubby and I went for a ride around the countryside. I found these guys taking in the sun.

Cute overload

It seems that a good summer last year makes for early arrivals this spring. We drove around over the weekend and  found lots of calves, some were just minutes old!

My story of the Three Sisters

For those that don't google things asked why there were only 2 Sisters in my photo but are called Three Sisters.

Once upon a time, along the coastline of Taranaki, there were four 'stacks'. It seems that they had no name but were still beautiful to see.  After the turn of the 20th century, one was reclaimed by the ocean, leaving what were eventually given the name of the 'Three Sisters' and people came from far and wide to take their photograph . Click here to see a photo.

In 2003, one of the sisters disappeared in a storm but no one had the heart to call them Two Sisters. That would have been a cartographer's nightmare and there was so much signage that would have to be changed.

Eventually, a third stack arose again, as  pictured below, but apparently, it wasn't good enough to be called a Sister.

And then, sometime in 2014,  after much erosion and hard work by the ocean, an appropriate 'Sister' emerged from the coastline. The local newspaper declared that it was, indeed, a new addition to the family and now the Sisters are three again.

We shall watch with bated breath to see if it becomes an animal companion to the lone elephant that keeps the Sisters company.

Patea on a windy day

We've had some horrific winds for the last few weeks and they certainly have affected the water in the Tasman Sea.

The first two photos were taken from the lookout  at the Patea River while black sand pelted Hubby and me. The wind blew the camera so much I had to straighten almost all the photos but the view was still incredible.

When we went down to the coastline, the sand was blowing everywhere.

The remains of a pier seemed to be in another world with low tide.

Palmerston North

For some reason, I am drawn to the Art Deco buildings everwhere we go!

kai iwi beach

Much of the Taranaki coast is made of mudstone and shale and, as the sign indicates, are always changing. But that doesn't take away from the amazement I feel when I see them.

I like seeing the colors of the layers...

...the black lava sand mingled with the white sand...

...and the fossilized stuff that makes little sense to me unless I attribute it to an awesome God with a great sense of humor!

Occasionally, there are artists at work with the driftwood...

and I am quite intrigued by the spidery veins that the water makes as it tries to run to the ocean.

These sights are wonderful things I'd never have seen if I hadn't moved to New Zealand and, even after almost 9 years, I still love to see.

the view from here

If you sit on this bench at Kaupokonui, you will see...

this view of the ocean. I could sit there for hours.

full moon

The moon seemed quite big as it loomed low over the pastures on our way home tonight and I had to stop and take a shot of it.

fairy town

I photographed these magical little toadstools at Hollard Garden with the other autumn colors in my last post. Every time I see a them, I feel the urge to write a children's story about a tiny, little world. Alas, I am not disciplined enough to do it; so I settle for taking some macro shots.

Before you start nit-picking about my choice of words, there is no difference between mushrooms and toadstool, although the term 'toadstools' has gradually become applied to toxic types. http://www.patient.co.uk/doctor/Mushroom-and-Toadstool-Toxicology.htm and http://knowledgenuts.com/2014/01/05/difference-between-toadstools-and-mushrooms/

around the mountain

Once or twice a year, when we can't think of anywhere specific to go, we drive around Mt Taranaki and meander down some beach roads. This weekend was one of those times, since the weather forgot it's suppose to be getting cooler as we head into autumn.

Lots of people brought their dogs to play in the sand and water.

I take a photo of these trees every time we go down this road. I think it might be a reminder to keep growing, no matter what happens.

I believe this is toe-toe on the left and pampas on the right.

Although the water was far from calm, there were many who braved the waves to swim or surf.

Mt Taranaki, in all his radiant glory.
