more scenes from a train

Here are a few more shots from our train trip between
Palmerston North and Hamilton on KiwiRail Scenic Journeys.

We spent a night in jail!

Our last night in Christchurch was spent in the Jailhouse Accommodations at the locally converted jail. Click here for their website.

Being a backpackers' hostel, I expected it to be loud but the 'inmates', even though most of them were pretty young, were well-behaved and respectful. That's our room with the bunk beds!

Pancake Rocks

Along the West Coast Road in the South Island is this fabulous formation of limestone rocks called Pancake Rocks. I won't show you all the photos we took, but I do hope these are enough to entice you to visit, should you be in the area.

Patea on a windy day

We've had some horrific winds for the last few weeks and they certainly have affected the water in the Tasman Sea.

The first two photos were taken from the lookout  at the Patea River while black sand pelted Hubby and me. The wind blew the camera so much I had to straighten almost all the photos but the view was still incredible.

When we went down to the coastline, the sand was blowing everywhere.

The remains of a pier seemed to be in another world with low tide.

Palmerston North

For some reason, I am drawn to the Art Deco buildings everwhere we go!

Ferrymead Heritage Park

It has a little Edwardian town with a school, shops and lots of other things from that era.
