st hilda in the wood

but we didn't find it.
When we got home, we found we should have gone just a few more kms
down the road.  So, we took another trip and found it this time!

We couldn't decide if this was an artsy house or just containers
put together. Either way, it works!

We  found the warning sign at the beginning was
useful at about the 40km mark!

The road followed the Waitotara River all the way down the road and beyond.
I have no idea what this structure in the river is.
If anyone has any ideas, I'd be glad to hear them.

We finally arrived at St Hilda in the Wood Church.
A lady at the farmhouse across the road saw us and let us inside.

I didn't realize Hubby and I were reflected in the mirror in the center of the organ!

Obviously, 114 years ago, there were many more farmers in the area than there are now. Finding many  trees like this poplar windbreak, surrounding a house that is no longer there, I have to wonder about the houses and lives so far away from 'the city'.

Thank you for persisting and finding this wee gem Betty, and then sharing with us!!
The stool for the organ is covered with the same tapestry that my mother worked to cover the family piano stool, and the shaped legs are the same as on what is now my stool. What a coincidence!!
Stay safe

Good you went back to find this beautiful, little church. I always enjoy seeing your photo series.

Oh, what a beautiful, wide view of the sky!
The calf on the side of the road (without a fence), such a sight is no longer offered in our landscape, the vastness of the country is missing.
I like the little church, made entirely of wood!

How interesting! A small church on the longest road in New Zealand. I enjoyed seeing your photos

This reminds me so much of our trip last summer to "Oregon's Outback" -- southeastern part of our home state and so different from the part where we live. We traveled a lot of long no-exit roads without seeing another soul. And there was at least once when we missed the thing we set out to see because we didn't go far enough. -- abandoned farm houses were common, so we had many of the same thoughts you had. But we never did find anything as wonderful as St Hilda's Church. That is an amazing find and it is absolutely charming. I am so glad you guys went back and tried again. I loved this post.
