SS Waitangi shipwreck

This is the latest photo of the Waitangi shipwreck at Patea, NZ. In
the years I've been here, it's been a game of hide-and-seek seeing it uncovered
on the beach. Alas, I think it will be exposed for a while, since much of the sand has been blown off the shore.

In earlier searches, there was an almost-vertical hill of sand from the shoreline up
to the clifftop. Now that the sand has been blown away, it's rather easy to see the wreck and get to it for photos.

patea beach

The ever changing beaches have uncovered our shipwreck at Patea
again. The Waitangi was peeking from the sand for the third
time in the last 14 years.
I was really surprised at the changes at the beach, but it was three
years ago that we last walked on the sand dunes.
Of course, the waves are always mesmerizing!
Hubby took most of the photos.

Waitangi shipwreck, Mana Bay, Patea

This is the wreck of the S. S. Waitangi that sank at the Patea breakwater in 1923. It was covered with black sand for decades, peeking from its resting place on occasion, but being covered again. The winds uncovered it over the last few years and it had been visible since.    Click here for more information.

Waitangi shipwreck

The Patea Co-operative Freezing Company's steamer Waitangi, which was used to transport Taranaki meat, ran on to the rocks on the western side of Patea mole on May 5, 1923. Patea resident Jim Baird said that the raw elements exposed the wreck every few years.

The grounding 87 years ago cut significant holes in her hull and the Waitangi was immediately deemed a wreck. There was much debate through the years about whether she should be removed from the beach or left to rust.
Over time the wreck prevented sand being blown over the wall into the Patea River.
She gradually disappeared from sight as the beach rose higher.
A heavy westerly exposed her in July 1937 and again in July 1978 but the sand quickly claimed her. Built in England in 1889, the Waitangi was 120 feet long, 171 tonnes and had a top speed of 12 knots.
She was purchased by the Patea Co-operative Freezing Company in 1919.
