random sights

Here are some more random photos from the South Island.

This is an actual cottage.

I can't imagine the back-breaking work it took to build these rock walls.

Old Sod Cottage

Considering the fact that the British meaning of 'sod' is demeaning, I had to stop
to look around.
Fortunately, 'sod' is the material that the house is made from!

Hugh Murray built in the 1860s for John McIntosh, as a store and as a stopping place
for miners heading to the Tuapeka goldfields.

Mt Taranaki

I love to watch the mountain out the front window, especially when it's clear but windy. The clouds float past quite quickly and change shapes as they go. I also enjoy the lenticular clouds that form above the mountain.

Ocean favorites

It's been rainy and windy all week so I looked through
my archives for some bright and cheery photos.

Heartland Flyer

On Sunday, a mere 14 hours before the earthquake that closed all the railroad tracks, we boarded the Heartland Flyer in Paekakariki (pronounced pie-ka-ka-ree-kee) and headed north through the Manawatu Gorge up to Woodville and back.
The train is run by Steam Incorporated and, despite the weather, it was a fun and relaxing ride.

There was an old shunter on hand to get us started.
Each car has been lovingly restored in different styles. If you are interested in these lovely cars and engines, click here on their website, then click on  the 'locomotives and rolling stock' tab on the left.

Hubby took this fabulous shot!
