calves

These cuties were happy to have their photos taken over the weekend!

7/8/19

critters from the weekend

Hubby took me for one of his awesome rides over the weekend!
We followed one road pretty much from one end to the other--which sounds easy, but there were portions of the road that were never completed, so there were detours to be taken.

Along the way we found some critters in the winter weather. We scared these hawks when we crested a hill.

So, of course, we circled back to see if I could get some pictures.  This one must have been very hungry because he let us get very close.

This friendly one trotted over when we stopped the car.

These are beef calves as they are too early for the controlled dairy calves.

In the same pen were these two, perhaps moms.

hungry hawk

When Hubby was on his way home, he drove by this juvenile hawk on our road as it was eating. I guess he was too hungry to care that a car was just a few feet meter away and didn't notice when I grabbed the camera and we drove back to see if he was still there.

signs of the season

They say that 'One swallow does not a summer make'.
I wonder what these swallows are trying to say!

new arrivals

I visited the farm that is on the land where we rent and saw some of
their new calves. They are well cared for but I found that farming is
not a simple operation any more.

This one was born that morning.

Most can be sold when they know who the father is through
AB (artificial breeding).

I learned that some of those born on this farm were twins. If the twins are
male/female, the female is usually infertile.

They all just had their horns 'removed' that day so they
were a little less lively than usual.

But they were all adorable!

little lambsies

Although the weather still isn't great, our drive around the
countryside was brightened by these little bouncy babies!

**I have updated my list of photo links, so feel free to click the
'photo memes' tab at the top of the page!**

8/5/17

gulls

My archives are full of these guys. They are always fun to see, especially
when they are hungry.

This one even photobombed me while trying to photograph the ocean
out of the car window!

9/7/15

meeting new friends

It was quite windy over the weekend, so shooting flowers was out of the question. We did, however, make some new friends as we wandered through some back roads and stopped at Victoria Park in Stratford. The lone goose in the first shot is a resident on the pond in the park. I blogged about him/her years ago, here. We assume it's a 'he' since his friend seems to have had some babies.

The calves and sows were quite eager to get to the fence to check us out when we stopped.

12/13/14

furry visitors

These hares were introduced to New Zealand for food and sport.

As cute as these little critters are, they are nothing but a nuisance.  Of course, I have to give our cat, Grace, some credit for trying to keep the population down--she brings in many little ones in the spring; one night she brought in four!!

white-faced herons

These guys --not these two specific ones, but earlier ones--self-introduced the species to New Zealand in the 1940's. They apparently liked it a lot and decided to stay. These guys--yes, these two specifically, no doubt a breeding pair--visit the water trough behind the house regularly. They probably live near the stream that runs behind the pasture.

Not sure what this one is looking at!

Hubby caught this one shaking himself!

10/19/14

wild things!

On a rainy Saturday ride along the 'back roads' we found some great wild things!

Wild geese

Wild turkeys

Goats were introduced as a meat source and to control introduced weeds. You can read more here.
