Maori legends

While we were in Whakatane, we visited some Maori sights.

This is Muriwai's Cave, one of the three landmarks Toroa was told to look for when returning to New Zealand from Hawaiki.
Click here for the legend behind the cave.

Wairere Falls, the second place in the legend.

Irakewa Rock is the third place in the legend. It seems that most of it was
destroyed but some remains.

This is the statue of Wairaka that stands in Whakatane Harbor.

Every time I've taken her photo, I've had to 'remove' a seagull from her head!!

Beautifully haunting pictures.... the statue is lovely out there and you did a perfect job of getting rid of that pesky gull...I would never have guessed. I haven’t yet visited the links you provided, but I am going there now ... we are always interested in Native American legends and special places and if ever we were lucky enough to be in NZ, we’d want to search out these places. (I commented first because if I click on links I always forget to come back to comment.). Thanks for providing them.

I love the statue, she looks like she's going to dive in the water in just a second. What a beautiful place.

The placement of the statue was inspired (and she can continue to inspire even with a seagull on her head)! Thanks for sharing with us!
