roadside shots

I like to think I'm pretty adaptable to new places and situations. I've driven in Chicago and Kansas City. I've lived out in the boonies, some places were many miles to the nearest place to buy anything. And I've been content in just about all my living situations. I guess moving to NZ proved that I'm really a country girl at heart. I'm sure I could live in the city, but with views along the 'highway' like these, who would want to?!

This is the 'Jesus Rock'. It gets vandalized, but someone always paints 'Jesus loves you' on it.

We stopped at this camp ground to stretch our legs and wondered if Ranger Smith would appreciate his own camp site like this one. (If you laughed, then I know how old you are!)

I love the sights and sounds of New Zealand.

Paradise Valley Springs

Part of of holiday was the exciting chance to pet a real, live lion cub at Paradise Valley Spring just outside of Rotorua.

There are wild deer that roam the countryside and this one was among the lucky ones that get fed by tourists.

This little wallaby seemed very content to take food pellets from our hands.

Some noisy ducks that begged for attention. And food.

There were hungry faces all along the pathway through the park.

I think this little guy was a bit shy.

It is very interesting that American Rainbow trout were introduced into the Rotorua area about 1913. In some places (like the place in the Waimangu Valley I mentioned in my other blog) the fish are of totally pure stock because there is no water flowing in or out. They like the warm waters near the thermal areas and are readily fed from passersby.

Ameri'car'na in NZ

Each year, American car owners get together and tour around the country showing off their muscle cars and awesome paint jobs. It's called Americarna and is quite a sight to see. We missed it this year, but the flags were still flying in Hawera a few days after the cars were gone.

Hollard Garden

Hollard Garden is a free garden that is full of wondrous beauty. We usually go on a weekday and, sadly, we are usually alone.

They have begun to have classes and events there which helps to spread the word about this great place.

It's in Kaponga, just south of Stratford. If you're ever in the neighborhood, make plans to stop by. You won't be disappointed!

Hollard Gardens

I am so tired of the rain (although I know we need it). So to combat my 'cabin fever' Hubby took me to one of our favorite places, Hollard Gardens. Fortunately, we didn't get too wet.

Eltham, Taranaki, movie set

Predicament, the fourth book by Ronald Hugh Morrieson, is being filmed partly in the tiny town of Eltham, where the author lived. There has been some work on Bridge Street to make it into a 1930's street and the Town Hall has a set being built in it. Here are a few photos that we snapped the other day when we went through Eltham.

Turuturu Park

Hubby is always on the lookout for places we can walk that are of interest to us all. This is Turuturu Park in Hawera that has seen better days. But it was quite interesting, even in the dead of winter.

This is an old Maori Pa (fortress) that was really huge. It not only sat on a hill, but they also dug several ditches at intervals up the hillside to deter enemies.
