The black-backed gulls looked like they were half buried in the sand but were just resting. The terns were quite photogenic. These were taken at Opunake Beach.

These kereru, or wood pigeons, are usually loners, but they are not immune to spring's call.

WATW and NZ Kereru

It's getting to be autumn in my part of the world, so I am delving into the archives for  photos.  This is a New Zealand wood pigeon, it's Maori name is kereru. When you hear them fly overhead, they sound like helicopters. Honest.

They are quite shy and sound a bit like a helicopter blade rotating when they fly overhead. Really!

This is a New Zealand wood pigeon. Its Maori name is Kereku and can weigh up to  650g (1.4 lb).

Kereru

At Hollard Gardens, we see many native birds. This one is a Kereru or Wood Pigeon. They are rather large birds and sound like a helicopter when they fly past. They eat mostly fruit.
