patea dam boat launch

The journey to the dam is always interesting with the wildlife and scenery
along the winding dirt roads. I include this map so you can see how far
from the ocean it is among the hills of South Taranaki.

The thing I find most interesting is the parking lot/boat launch at the dam.

It is covered with seashells! When I google about the shells, the first entry is my 2015
post on the same place, but no other discussion of them. I guess the volcanic activity
on the north island has something to do with it. But it still boggles my mind!

I imagine I will always be excited when we visit this place :)

Certainly that was once the sea floor, was the rock raised by volcanic activity? Very interesting!

Amazing to see all the sea shells embedded in the ground. Great photos!

Interesting scatter of seashells. This ground must have been under water at a time long ago. I can understand why you did not see a bandicoot on your walk. They are mostly nocturnal and quite shy. Best to just let them be.

Geology is such a fascinating subject and these shells are most intriguing :)

Geology has always fascinated me. Incredible to see those seashells in the parking lot and so far away from the water too! I love those kind of finds.

An interesting place and one wonders the amount of seashells in the parking lot.
