worker's hut

At Pioneer Village in Stratford, I found this quite ingenious to make a house from metal drums.

The little sign on the door says 'whare' (pronounced far-ay), a Maori word that means 'home'.

How very ingenious to make the house out of drums and it was great to see the inside and how they have kept it for people to see,

"Whare is where the heart is" and lastly there's a lot of drumming going on here. Corny! Tom The Backroads Traveller

Interesting way to make a house. Love seeing all the rusty utensils inside! My kind of place to visit!

Agree, very ingenious! But wouldn't they get really hot\/

That is great; a place to cook, a place to eat and a place to sit/sleep...all under a roof and mostly wind-proof. That'll do!!!

Something similar over at my place today. YAM xx

Wow...that makes me sad. For a workman to call this home. I'm glad they saved it (or reconstructed it) for a museum so people can see how hard it was during the Depression!

Interesting little house. I guess you make do with the materials you have.

Wow!! I cannot imagine living in a place like that, but I suppose it was better than sleeping rough! We have it so easy now, when it comes to housing!!

Tough lot, those pioneers! I've lived in some fairly basic habitations in my time but nothing quite that primitive - they have my admiration.
