Hubby ventured up the hill to take photos of the Lyttleton Time Ball station, one of only 5 in working order in the world.
From 1876 to 1934, a ball dropped on its stone tower, signaling the time to ships in Lyttleton Harbor.
The black sphere is a Maori Pou. (Click here.)

An interesting, historical story.
ReplyDeleteWhat a unique time piece. Never have seen on like it before.
ReplyDeletegreat photos! I love that dog statue!
ReplyDeleteI’d never heard of a time ball …fascinating how it worked and neat that still is in working order, preserving what was an important part of maritime history. I love that they remembered Skippy who kept an eye on things (and ear) ! He was faithful to his self-appointed job!
ReplyDeleteThat's South Island, right? Around Christchurch, that part. I taught Geography in school, the Southern Continents included New Zealand.
