old roses

I wouldn't know how to start to identify these lovely roses that line one side of our garden.
They have, obviously, been around for many years--probably planted when the house was
built in the '60's or '70's--and have been cross pollinated over and over.


Aside from their obvious beauty, they have a very faint but lovely smell.

Only one purple bush remains but it gives lots of wonderful blooms.
Last summer, I cut off a few limbs and stuck them in the ground in two 
places, farther down the fence. To my very pleasant surprise, both groups
had lovely flowers on them this spring!

    Yes, the roses are beautiful and amazing that they are still healthy and blooming well after being around for so many years. These roses make wonderful fence.

    In Italy we say that the rose is the queen of flowers. Nice to have roses in every garden.

    Those pictures bring back all kinds of happy memories. My grandmother had lots of old varieties of rose bush one of which grew in rampant profusion over what she called her "palace" but which everyone else knew as the outside toilet!

    Lovely old roses. It is possible your mauve /purple one is an old rambler called Veilchenblau
    from memory it is thornless and will scramble over other plants. Looks almost bruised.
