When we go out for drives, most of the time, we never see another vehicle of any kind. That's what makes our drives so comfortable, because I can holler 'Stop!' or 'Back up, please!' and not worry about any traffic. Our trip to find the 'Bridge to Somewhere' (just to say we did) started out like any other.
Imagine our surprise, on a backroad, minding our own business, we see a group of motorcycles coming our way! We pulled over to let them pass (almost every one of them nodded or waved in response) and went on...and found more! Probably, 100 in total.
We saw quite a few wild goats.
After quite a ride down the Upper Mangaehu Road, we found the bridge.
The bridge was built a little too late. After the settlers in the area were hit by the Depression, they began leaving the valley. The last one left in 1942.
This was the end of our trip as land on the other side is private property.

Thank you for taking us along on your trip to the bridge to somewhere. It is a beautiful area, but looks too hilly to be good farm land. Interesting to read the histories you have included.

ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this Betty - I recognised the name as being the area where my father worked on farms during the depression for food and five shillings, a month!! (approx equal to $5 today)
