The boulders at Koutu Beach in Opononi are different and very interesting to see up close.
The boulders on the beach have been released from their soft host rock by erosion and simply rolled down and accumulated on the beach. Many people ask why are they spherical. The most likely explanation is that a small core rolled around on the sediment on the ocean floor and grew bigger much like a snowball does.

I thought they were small rocks until the next photos...beautiful scenery...Michelle
ReplyDeleteThose boulders, well some of them look volcanic, btw can you pass some of your height to 5 ft 3 me?
ReplyDeleteLovely shots!
ReplyDeleteThat's certainly an interesting collection of rocks. Great to see you in the photo, and to compare the height of the boulder too. There are fascinating places to visit in your country :D)
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteWhat a neat place to visit. The builders are interesting. They would be taller than me, I am only 5.5. Wonderful photos! Enjoy your day, happy weekend!
Whoa, those are big rocks. Love the photos with peeps, too. Isn't it great how God made tall men for tall women. Love that.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!

What a wonderful place to visit
ReplyDeleteYou can sure use your imagination when you see all the shapes and sizes and interesting marks on these! How amazing!
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos, nice to see you and the family in the photos and to compare the size. We enjoyed seeing the boulders at Moeraki in the South Island years ago, they seem similar.
ReplyDeleteWow, those boulders are huge! Fun to see you both and your MIL too, by the way, even if you really only did it for size comparison! .... that one boulder has a face! What an interesting beach and a good explanation of how it happened. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteNature is beautiful, unique. The rocks are similar to those in Sardinia (Italy).
ReplyDeleteWow, how amazing is nature? I love the changing landscapes of the world, and the different scenes of beaches I have never been to. Thank you for sharing! #openslather
