Birds before coffee

When I opened the drapes this morning, there were spanaries (yellow hammers, actually, but I prefer my name for them) on the front lawn that let me take their photos.

Then, I noticed more fantails than usual that were flying around the side of the
house, so I went to the spare room window and saw lots of birds flitting
around into the copper sheen tree and out.

All these photos were through the window and before my first cup of coffee!

From top left, clockwise: English goldfinches, starling, fantail, goldfinch,
sparrows, spanaries.

From top right, counterclockwise: waxeye, yellowhammer, fantail, waxeye,
fantail, goldfinches

  2. Yellowhammers, Sparrows, Starlings and Goldfinches are all birds that are familiar in the English landscape, though Yellowhammers are not as plentiful as they once were. Goldfinches on the other hand are much more numerous since people started putting up bird-feeders. A fine selection to see before breakfast!

  3. Yes I wonder why they were even called Yellowhammers, I think you name for these birds fits them better.

  4. How common are yellowhammers there? They're really declining over here so it's lovely to see them in your garden!

  13. Wow, Betty, I am not sure my hands would be that steady without coffee! But when you see the birds, you have to capture the moment - and well done! Those goldfinches are so much more handsome than the American variety. Thanks for sharing your menagerie with Mosaic Monday!
