Hubby read in the paper that the council wants to stop maintaining part of Kiwi Road.
So, of course, we wanted to find out for ourselves if they were right or wrong!
Getting to Kiwi Road was not an easy task, but the scenery was pretty cool.
And, then, with this ominous sign, we found Kiwi Road.
There had been logging done. The tree trunks left standing are from ponga
trees that are useless as lumber.
Not far before this tunnel, the 'road' turned into a track with grass down the middle.
That's when we realized this was probably the part they wanted to stop keeping up.
For the last few miles, this is the only photo I took as the road was so twisty
and rocky that we couldn't stop (and looked like the same turns over and over!), even when we went under a tree that had just enough room for a vehicle cut out of it as it lay across the road!
So, we decided that the council was probably right. I'm sure they are
...how neat, my kinds of road. I'd call this being out in the sticks!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great road to find. Your photos are beautiful. Your first photo gave me a laugh as you found a mighty boot.

ReplyDeleteThis is what I call sheep-track driving and we have lots of it in Scotland... up top, though, the council decided to turn it into a tourist draw...The North Coast 500 is now so busy they are being forced into even more maintenance! Kiwi Road, though, may have a few less settlements than the 500. What a stunning place. Surely if the council does withdraw, the drive may become impassable... YAM xx
I enjoyed your adventure. It's the kind that the Husband and me like to take, only right now we'd need to rent a car to do it since our Eliza Does-alot is too old. That big old shoe in your first photo is so cool. Has me wanting to make something like that. A Joyful 2019 to you, Betty. :-)
ReplyDeleteHello, Betty.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful land New Zealand is. Great for your photos.Thank you for sharing.
What a great road, I guess there are no farms/families living down Kiwi Road so mm it does not have to be maintained. Beautiful scenery.
ReplyDeleteWow this looks like an amazing walk. I’d love to go to NZ.
ReplyDeleteThank you for linking up to #SilentSunday.
Oh, Wow! We were on a road like that in southern Indiana a few years ago...I do not know what we would have done had we met a car. There was no room to pass and no way to turn around. But oh, how i loved it and I would this one, too.
ReplyDeleteThat there looks like a commitment. You're pretty brave tooling around that terrain, I think it would be heaven on a mountain or hybrid bike. Very pretty terrain none the less and I am in LOVE with that shoe. I found a huge arsed show on the side of the road that I might dig out and post for ya sometime.
ReplyDeleteThis is my kind of country side. Glad you got photos of it before it was 'too late'! I can only imagine that the tunnel will be overgrown and will disappear quickly if it is not maintained!! Happy New Year to you!
ReplyDeleteWow, Hang on to your hats!! Beautiful scenery, iffy "path". I love the way you guys explore -- we'd do the same! (Not pulling our caravan though of course). Sign reminds me of one of my favorites that says "Last Chance -- Turn Around" on a road near the Everglades. We went on!
ReplyDeletevery beautiful

ReplyDeleteFascinating countryside and a road that demands one's attention!
