new arrivals

I visited the farm that is on the land where we rent and saw some of
their new calves. They are well cared for but I found that farming is
not a simple operation any more.

This one was born that morning.

Most can be sold when they know who the father is through
AB (artificial breeding).

I learned that some of those born on this farm were twins. If the twins are
male/female, the female is usually infertile.

They all just had their horns 'removed' that day so they
were a little less lively than usual.

But they were all adorable!

  5. I never knew that the horns were removed from calves.I always wondered why there were so many cattle without horns.

  6. I didn't know that abuot twin calves! There are very few family farms nowadays here -- especially cattle .. they all seem to be corporate farms. Which does not thrill me.

  8. Beautiful calves! Great shots of them, Betty! It's extremely hard nowadays for small farms to make a living - kudos to them! Thank you for bringing this interesting and relevant subject to All Seasons! Have a lovely week!
