It's easy to overlook this shipping marker on the side of the road leading to the
beach at Opunake. As simple as it is, I'm sure it was very important when ships
came with a variety of cargo. According to this article, Opunake didn't have a port for long.
Here's a shot of the bay that they had to navigate.
I could stand & enjoy the bay view for ages!
ReplyDeleteThat is a great looking old marker. Fine sunday shot.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't you love to be able to step back in time and see New Zealand? Love that second view.
ReplyDeleteSuch markers were known as "landmarks" - that's the original use of the word. In the UK these were often church steeples.
ReplyDelete...Betty, such a nice history lesson, it's nice to learn something new every day. Thanks for sharing, please stop back again.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting post and lovely view.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of shipping markers like this before but it sounds like they work the same as the current channel alignment markers (2 sets of triangles separated on poles that line up when you are on course in a channel).
ReplyDeletethat view is beautiful and i love the touch of history with it!
ReplyDeleteI love these little details that give a reminder of the past. Looks a beautiful bay.
ReplyDeleteHow interesting, Betty! That last shot is marvellous...
