in the garden

Even though most of the native trees here in New Zealand are evergreens of one kind or another, we have two ornamental cherry trees in the front yard garden that provide a bit of autumnal color. Here is one of them in its fall glory.

I'm sure these trees have been here since the house was originally build and was used as the homestead before the bigger house down the drive was built. Over the years, they obviously weren't pruned or shaped, so the limbs are askew and the trees are quite unique. I find the huge limbs interesting as they appear to have shiny bands all along them.

I also found this little wax eye flitting around.

  1. Great pics of the little waxeye. We get a lot in the feijoa trees outside our kitchen window. Pretty autumn colours in the cherry trees as well. Winter has finally arrived in our neck of the world.

  7. We're very similar over the other side of the ditch :) Evergreens everywhere, which really makes those deciduous trees stand out! We have one in our new yard, and l love watching it change colour. Winter has arrived quickly though, Tuesday morning we dropped down to 1.8c, now that's cold for the subtropics!
Hope you're well, and thanks for continuing to participate in Reconnect with Nature. xx

  8. Fall is my 2nd favorite season. It's neat to see the fall colors here but I'm not ready to see them in our part of the world just yet. Love the sweet little bird.

  12. Nice tree to have around! The Waxwing wouldn't visit if it weren't for that tree. Reminds me of a vireo here in the US!
