In researching these little blue jellyfish, I have found that they are washing up in great numbers on shores around the world. From what I can find, the first picture shows a line of velella velella, a type of cnidaria jellyfish, that litter the shore.
The next two shots are Portuguese man-o-war's. Scary looking things. In the first shot, that's a size 14 boot next to it for comparison.
Please feel free to correct me on the names.
Horrendous looking things! I've heard of Portuguese Men o' War, of course, but never seen a picture of one; nasty! Happy Christmas.

ReplyDeleteYup PMoW aka 'bluebottles' - they have plagued the surfing and bathing beaches of Australia forever. Some beaches even had bottles of vinegar affixed for emergency first aid on stings....(think that's changed now) YAM xx
I used to see man-o-war when we lived on Midway Island. They are beautiful...but the stings of any jellyfish can keep you at bay, for sure! :-) Great photos.

ReplyDeletehorrendous creatures(except in photos)! I got stung by a jellyfish in Florida many years ago...haven't liked them since!
