This is the wreck of the S. S. Waitangi that sank at the Patea breakwater in 1923. It was covered with black sand for decades, peeking from its resting place on occasion, but being covered again. Oh how interesting! I love to come upon things like this. We have a shipwreck off the Oregon coast (the Peter Iredale) which is very popular.

Very haunting and yet strangely beautiful. Sad about it being shipwrecked but so cool to see it now in it's faded glory.

ReplyDeleteThose are outstanding photos of that old shipwreck. Seeing it just makes you wonder who was aboard when it sank, who survived if any and where was it coming from and going to.
