These guys --not these two specific ones, but earlier ones--self-introduced the species to New Zealand in the 1940's. They apparently liked it a lot and decided to stay. These guys--yes, these two specifically, no doubt a breeding pair--visit the water trough behind the house regularly. They probably live near the stream that runs behind the pasture.

Nice looking birds. I know they are named "heron" but they have a look of small egrets. Must be good to have them around ona regular basis.
