white-faced herons

These guys --not these two specific ones, but earlier ones--self-introduced the species to New Zealand in the 1940's. They apparently liked it a lot and decided to stay. These guys--yes, these two specifically, no doubt a breeding pair--visit the water trough behind the house regularly. They probably live near the stream that runs behind the pasture.

Hubby caught this one shaking himself!

  15. Nice looking birds. I know they are named "heron" but they have a look of small egrets. Must be good to have them around ona regular basis.

  19. What interesting visitors, such large birds. It was great that your hubby caught one shaking. They would be fun to watch as long as you don't have a pond with fish in it.
