Forgotten World Highway - State Highway 43

Last weekend we took highway 3 up the coast and came back by highway 43. Here's a map to prove that it's an actual part of the NZ roadway :)

Highway 43 is called the Forgotten World Highway. Click here if you want to know more. It has some wonderful scenery along the way, even though some of the road is not paved.

Heavy rains cause slips where supporting soil falls away from the road.

Escaped farm animals are a common sight.

Hobbit's Hole built in 1936. The floor of the tunnel was lowered in 1985 to allow trucks through.

A beautiful place. It's good that you've travelled and recorded this road as it looks as though it may become impassable if there are many more landslips.

Great to see this part of New Zealand although that road looks a bit risky in parts. Glad to see fences although they don't all seem to keep the cattle in. Love the shot where you are emerging from the tunnel.

What a beautiful road! And the kind I seek out to travel. The Hobbity tunnel is my favorite, and how clever they lowered the floor rather than raised the ceiling for truck a access.
I didn't realize you are an American living in New Zealand. I mean, of course I knew you lived in NZ, but not that you are an expat! Wow, what a beautiful place to live and explore. I wonder if you have written about how you came to be there. I'd love to know.

An awesome place. Showed the photos to hubby and said do you know where this is? Skyline Drive says he. I told him to look at the vegetation...when did you see Palm trees on Skyline Drive? I asked. Thanks for sharing these photos. I always picture Australia looking like the area around Ayers Rock.

Photos showing the reality is always more valuable than leaflets tourist offices. Thanks for this set.

I love getting out into this sort of country, it makes me nostalgic for my home county - Westland - on the west coast of the South Island. Thanks for sharing.
